Pennsylvania & Western RR

Layout Description

The Pennsylvania & Western is a fictional subdivision of PRR located in the western PA mountains in the time period 1949-53. It is an alternate East-West route and carries secondary freight and passenger traffic. The main portion of the layout is 28 by 52 feet, with an additional 10 by 12 foot extension. The overall dimensions of the visible layout are thus 40 by 52 feet. Staging yards representing Harrisburg and Pittsburgh are housed in an adjoining 8 by 18 foot room. Most of the mainline is single track. There are 6 towns along the line.

The mainline is 550 feet long (5 scale miles) and there is about 2000 feet of track overall. Power is mostly Pennsy steam with a few first generation Diesels mixed in.

The operating schedule consists of the following types of trains:
through passenger
local passenger
coal drags and mine runs
through freights (some have local switching)
local freights
There are also industrial switching jobs run within yard limits.

Locomotive changes, prototypical signals and a helper operation add to the fun. See the March 2014 issue of Model Railroad Hobbyist magazine at http://mrhpub.com/2014-03-mar/land/
for more information.

For those that have operated here before, a new prototypical signal system has been installed since the last SWOOPS.
