Cincinnati Northern Railroad

Layout Description

The Cincinnati Northern is a mostly prototypical line modeled after the Cincinnati Northern RR as if it existed independently in the mid-1950s. We model several towns (in order) over the southern half of the railroad up to the midpoint, Van Wert, where there is (was) the railroad’s HQs, a central classification yard, and the railroad’s engine facilities; which is now gone.
Since loss of space at Ross, we currently meet at members homes and shops in order to construct a modular type movable model railroad.

The layout is two decks with an intermediate helix to transition decks. You follow your train around the layout from north to south, or south to north, with end staging and starting points above and below each other – point to point. Attempts have been made to resemble both the track and industries in the towns as they existed in the ‘50s.

We use TT&TO operations where the timetable resembles the prototype’s timetable with a few modeler’s additions. Locals are run similar to the prototype. We’ve added a few through trains. And we’ve continued passenger service past it’s closing date into the ‘50s. Local switching is based on actual industry needs per our research and conjecture. Waybills are designed to resemble the prototype waybills, but with emphasis on making important info for the modeler easy to find and read. We have not yet built our dispatcher’s panel, so the dispatching is done loosely via the dispatcher wandering the layout. Train orders are very loose and issued on Form 19’s only occasionally as needed – most operations are TT based with loose verbal orders when required
