Layout Description

The RF&E Ry. is a double-deck, point to point layout handling interchange traffic between Clarksburg, WV. toward Staunton, VA. It departs Clarksburg using the B&O Weston Subdivision to Weston, where the RF&E departs the B&O and travels onto their own railroad toward Staunton, VA. Their are separate branches for the B&O from Walkersville, WV. to Blue Creek and Charleston WV. (Note: Not seen on map published in the April 2016 MR. The B&O again connects via a crossover at Walkersville down a lead connecting with the team track toward hidden trackage, where it connects with the Charleston Cutoff known as B&O Jct. ) The WM Ry. runs between Elkins and Durbin Jct. and again between Shavers Fork and the End of Track on the Saunders Branch. There are four yards, Thornwood on the WM and one at Homecrest on the RF&E. These are considered Industrial Yards handling local industrial switching within these areas. Robertstown is classed as an Intermediate Yard for locals and interchange traffic. The B&O Valley View Yard handles coal for the B&O and NYC railroads and is located halfway to Charleston. The railroad has thirty five staging tracks representing WM Elkins (5), B&O Blue Creek (3), B&O Charleston (8) , RF&E Staunton (7) and B&O & RF&E Clarksburg (12 ) . This railroad handles local and interchange freight between these various locations. Trains are dispatched in sequence using block phones for road crews and radio headsets for yardmasters. There are two sessions, A session one month and B session, where different trains operate during various sessions. Industrial locals, interchange runs, thru-freights, coal, hopper as well as an occasional H&W, OCS, Sperry and MW Specials.
Numerous local industries representing the Appalachian countryside can be seen as well as the familiar coal, coke and paper companies.
