The railroad is housed in a 20'x12' shed on the back of my property that is equipped with an A/C/Heating unit for those hot Florida summer days.
I designed a double deck layout with a helix on a 2.7% grade to move trains from the lower level to the upper level. The aisle space is 30" on each side of the peninsular, so the operators can walk around compfortably. Layout heights are 46" lower to 63" upper. Depth is from 8" to 18" depending on where you are standing. It is free standing shelf style around the walls with the peninsula in the middle. It operates from Worcester, MA to the Port of Providence,RI. Trains travel from Worcester yard to Valley Falls Yard in Cumberland,RI,then on to Pawtucket,RI via the East Junction (TrainPR2) and to the Port of Providence,RI via the Habor Jct. (Train PR3). Train WOPR/PRWO moves interchange freight between Worcester and Valley Falls.
?From Worcester, Train WX1 and WX3 work local jobs like Dennision Lubricants and New England Sugars (NES).
All in all there are 4 to 5 operators, 12 different jobs for them to do in roughly a 2 to 3 hour session. ?Now on to the free lance part of the railroad. I have this
obesssion with paper mills. Inland Paper is it for me.
Inland Paper Co. will keep one operator busy for at least an hour. It has a total of 12 car spots. There is a plant switcher (Alco S2 7056) that handles the switching. The incoming cars (6) are spotted on a yard track at the plant. There is a switch list the operator uses to pull or spot cars within the plant. Once the operator has completed the work, a call is made to the P&W, and they will send (IPWO) to pickup the out bounds and setout the new inbound cars. This is great place if i just want to do some switching myself.
The lay0ut uses 2 NCE-DCC 5 amp systems. One just for trains operations and the other is for turnout and remote dispatching.
My sound decoders of choice are ESU Lok Sound. I feel its good just to have one. Make's speed matching a lot easier and all progamming
is done with their Lok Programmer. I use CVP Products AD4MC accessory decoders to control all the mainline and yard turnouts. Branch line turnouts are manual control. Circuit breakers are used to break up the power districts.
