Rick's Santa Fe makes slight adjustment in Southern California geography and history, with a never-built secondary main line between Los Angeles and Bakersfield via Oxnard. The railroad handles a great deal of fruit traffic, and features extensive (and sometimes challenging) switching operations as well as main line freight and passenger trains. Central Traffic Control, using a combination of target and semaphore signals, is run from a central dispatch panel. Operating positions include dispatcher, Casitas yard operator, dedicated operators for connecting short lines, local switchers at major towns, and various main line trains. Most trains have specific purposes (such as mail train, fruit express, livestock, etc.) and most will do some en-route switching.
While the railroad is fictionalized, there are many features intended to evoke the Santa Fe, including company-plan structures, resin-kit freight cars, and steam and Diesel locomo\tives.
The layout has been featured in Model Railroader and others. Rick served on the board of the Operations Special Interest Group from 2015 to 2019.
